In 2017 we celebrated the 350th anniversary of the birth of Jonathan Swift. Swift was an Anglo-Irish satirist, essayist, political pampleteer (first for the Whigs and then for the Tories), poet, and cleric who became the Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. Among many of his works are the better known Gulliver’s Travels and A Modest Proposal.
Dan Sperrin, the brilliant young cartoonist, has produced a unique pack of playing cards featuring images from Swift’s masterpieces and life.
Dan Sperrin is a doctoral student and tutor in English Literature at Corpus Christi College, Oxford. By trade, he is a specialist in the history of satire – from antiquity up to the present day – but his research centres around the work of Jonathan Swift. Sperrin’s work at Oxford is funded by the Worshipful Company of Makers of Playing Cards, which is one of the earliest trade guilds in the City of London, receiving its charter from King Charles I on the 22nd of October 1628.
Away from the University, Sperrin is a jazz musician and composer, but he is best known as a talented cartoonist. His work stretches from satirical portraiture and commentary to book illustration and surrealist line drawings, in a style often recognisable by its learned wit and complex negotiation of past and present. He is a rising star in the world of satirical cartoons with a contribution of widely-respected statements about his chosen subjects.
