To commemorate their 50th anniversary, BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour produced this pack of playing cards comprising 54 expectional women from Mae West to Cleopatra; Jane Austen to Marie Stopes.
There is an illustration on every card by Nicky Taylor and a short biography of each of the chosen women to accompany the pack.
Every card in the deck features a woman from history, and the four aces feature the four greatest women, as chosen by the Woman’s Hour team: Simone de Beauvoir, Billie Holliday, Jane Austen, and Queen Elizabeth I.
The kings are four leading stateswomen: Margaret Thatcher, Indira Gandhi, Golda Meir and Benazir Bhutto. Indeed, the latter was interviewed on the programme by Jenni when she first became prime minister of Pakistan. And the two jokers in the pack are, of course, comedians. The two chosen were Victoria Wood and Joyce Grenfell.
The choices for the faces were made by the Woman’s Hour team. Woman’s Hour is broadcast each weekday on Radio 4.
Produced exclusively by David Westnedge Ltd., London.
